The Karee Kloof Conservancy was established in 1998 to rehabilitate the overgrazed veldt. It comprises four adjoining farms, and spans about 5,000 hectares.
In addition to the indigenous wildlife of rhebok, klipspringer, duiker, aardvark, porcupine, Smiths red rock rabbit, black eagles, caracal, and leopard, other species namely gemsbok, springbok and eland have also been successfully introduced to the Karee Kloof Conservancy.
More than 80 recorded bird species, including the Orange-breasted and Cape Sunbirds, night jar , Black Harrier, Black Korhaan, Veraux’s Eagle and Pale Chanting Goshawk inhabit the Conservancy.
The herbarium boasts over 600 species of plants, some of them quite rare, as well as 13 protea species, including the “Magnifica”. Numerous natural medicinal herbs indigenous to the area, including Cancer Bush, Buchu, and Rooibos are also found here. Vegetation varies between Fynbos, the Succulent and Tanqua Karoo.
For the more adventurous at heart, a variety of exotic rock formations, extreme examples of buckled sandstone stratas as well as granite and quartz formations and rock art are waiting to be explored. You may even stumble upon the fossils that have been found in the surrounding areas.
